About Yamanote Line

The Yamanote Line is a circular train route that connects Tokyo’s major city centers. It loops through busiest hubs like Shinjuku, Shibuya, Tokyo, and Ueno. With its distinct light green trains, it is one of the most essential lines for both commuters and tourists.

The Yamanote Line consists of 30 stations and takes about 60 minutes to complete one full loop. It runs continuously in both clockwise (Outer Loop) and counterclockwise (Inner Loop) directions.

Avoid riding the Yamanote Line between 7:30 AM and 9:00 AM, and 5:30 PM and 7:00 PM. These peak commuting hours bring extreme overcrowding that can be overwhelming.

• Meaning of JY: The letters stand for “JR” and “Yamanote”.
• Starting Point: Tokyo Station is “JY01”, which serves as the base.
• Number Direction: Numbers increase clockwise (Outer Loop) from Tokyo toward Shinagawa, Shibuya, and Shinjuku.
• Final Station: Kanda Station is the last stop, numbered JY30.
